November Celebration of Learning and Conferences

Last week, students were very excited to bring home some of the work they have been doing this year to share with their families. Thank you for participating in the Celebration of Learning activities.  I hope it provided you with an opportunity to talk about and celebrate some of your child's achievements. Thank you also for participating in the November conferences this week. It was a pleasure to connect with everyone and share the progress your child is making.  As we move forward with our year together, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have. 

Science

This week we started to explore the topic of Hot and Cold Temperatures.  Students completed a journal page to reflect their initial understandings and shared questions/wonderings that they were curious about. We are excited to continue this work next week.




Math

We continued with our focus on building our understanding of number sense concepts. Students rotated through a set of math centres to demonstrate their understanding of numbers on the hundreds chart, do some problem solving and play Splat and Face Off.  We will continue to reinforce and build our number sense understanding and focus on two-digit numbers and place value concepts.

Monday, December 6: Coulee Walk (8:40am to 11:30am) We are looking for 3-4 volunteers for this trip.  If you have a current security clearance and would like to join us please send me an email.

We continue to be very busy in room 170! Here are some of the learning activities we have been doing. Social Studies We have started to learn about the arctic and the Inuit people. We have been very fortunate to be able to borrow some authentic and very old Inuit artifacts. We spent some time sketching them, looked at what materials they were made out of, and made predictions about how they were used. The students offered great ideas about what they thought each artifact was and what it may have been used for. We followed up this work by watching a short documentary that showed each artifact in action.  We were also very fortunate to enjoy a virtual presentation from "Grandma Carol" who taught in Ulukhaktok for three years in 1977. She showed us some amazing artifacts and told us some wonderful stories about life in the arctic. We learned so much from her presentation!   We have been very busy since returning to school after the break! Here are some of the things we have been learning about. Sound Kreations - Dance We really enjoyed our dance lessons with Josh from Sound Kreations! If you have not had the chance yet, please check out the video of our dance moves.  You can find the video on the stream on the Google Classroom. Enjoy! Math We have been using base ten blocks to create 2-digit numbers. We learned a game called The Trading Game to help reinforce place value concepts and building 2-digit numbers.  We have also been working to build automatic recall of friendly numbers to 10 (9+1, 8+2, 7+3, 6+4, 5+5) through rainbow math and playing Friendly Numbers Go Fish. 'Sprinter', a Walking Rainbow, 'OW', & our Class Photo!

What a week! I find that when the weather does a 180, our perception of time shifts, in this case back to winter yet it is nearing the end of April! 'Sprinter' is fun! On the whole, the children had a great attitude about our continued appearance of winter weather in springtime — 'sprinter' — and profited from the excellent building conditions outside! It is so rare that we get snow that binds well in our dry climate, but the shoulder season weather this week gave us that opportunity and the kids definitely took advantage of it. Once balls became too large to roll solo, they worked well together in small groups until they could make them positively monstrous in some cases! We also talked about fair play and if it is/n't acceptable to wreck someone else's creation.
